The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian – Sherman Alexie

sa

The book in one sentence: Arnold Spirit Jr. quits the local reservation high school to go to a better, all-white high school in the next county, in an inspirational underdog tale that will make you laugh!

Who would you recommend it to: If you’re looking for a refreshing, uplifting read, this is the book for you. A highly-recommended young adult book.

OK bits: It’s a story about how the biggest underdog of all underdogs there are in the world manages to triumph in life, with courage and spirit and determination. And a great sense of humour! It also won the National Book Award.

Boring bits: Nothing.

Verdict: I loved this book! Junior is funny, sweet, brave, smart and a whole lot more. A character you can’t help but root for, in whatever challenges he faces in life.

The title of the book already sounds hilarious! Aaargh…I’ve got bookshelves toppling and boxes filled with secondhand children’s books. No place for new reads like this😦

Sounds really good! When I first saw the title I thought it meant east Indian. It’s still confusing to me that we call native Americans “Indians” because Christopher Columbus discovered the wrong continent. Or something.
Anyway, I’ve read a lot about “Indian Schools” and indoctrination into western culture, and such. I will enjoy reading this.

nylusmilk: it is! one of the better young adult books of recent times. east indian as in… ? yeah before i read it i thought it was the asian indian. anyway, hope you can locate this book in your library or nearest bookshop!
